104 Field Battery RAA
History
The 104th Field Battery, Royal Regiment
of Australian Artillery had its beginnings in Moascar, a small town near
Ismalia, Egypt in March 1916. At this time the Battery was raised as part of
the general expansion of divisional artillery prior to the AIF going to
France. In the ensuing 63 years, the battery has been disbanded and
re-raised four times. Notwithstanding, the battery has seen active service
in France and South Vietnam, and has been a Howitzer battery, a Locating
battery, a Medium battery and a Field battery, the role in which it was last
employed before its most recent disbandment.
Since being raised as a part of 22
Howitzer Brigade, it has served with 4th Field Artillery Brigade, 1st Field
Regiment, 12th Field Regiment and 8th /12th Medium Regiment and now 1st
Field Regiment at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, Queensland.
104 Field Battery completed two tours of
South Vietnam as part of 12 Field Regiment, in support of 4 RAR/NZ. It had
the distinction of being the last artillery unit to serve there, departing
for Australia in December 1971.
